Grapefruit Lavender Sour

Pants Optional – Grapefruit Lavender Sour

Welcome to April’s Bourbon Women cocktail for the month, a grapefruit lavender whiskey sour. With so many of us working from home these days, and face it, many of us not working, it’s not always necessary to fix yourself up each morning, so I’m calling this cocktail the Pants Optional, because even in teleconferencing you can only see part of the picture. And right now, with so many of us sheltering at home, that’s all we can see of one another.

For this cocktail, I decided I wanted to do a sour because so many of us are waiting impatiently for spring, even though we’re stuck at home, but I wanted to play with floral flavors. I combined a grapefruit sour with some lavender-infused simple syrup and a little Campari to increase the bitter factor. If you don’t have loose lavender at home like I do, use a honey syrup and you will adore the combination.

Welcome spring with this floral grapefruit-lavender sour. Floral notes from a lavender-infused syrup blend deliciously with fresh grapefruit and lemon juice and whiskey.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1 oz grapefruit juice
  • ½ oz lemon juice
  • 1 oz lavender simple syrup** If you don’t have lavender in the house a honey syrup is an amazing substitution (see below for recipe)
  • ½ oz Campari
  • ¾ oz aquafaba or egg white optional
  • Garnish: grapefruit slices or lemon slices sprig of lavender if it’s in season

Instructions

  • Combine ingredients in a shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously for 60 seconds. Then shake for a bit more, especially if you added egg white or aquafaba. Double strain into a rocks glass over ice and garnish with slices of grapefruit or lemon.

Notes

** Lavender simple: Brew 2 tablespoons of lavender with 1 cup of water. Steep and let cool. Strain, add 1 cup of sugar and stir until combined. Store in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. Great in homemade lemonade, any whiskey sour, added to a champagne cocktail/mimosa, mixed in a refreshing mule or in added to a vodka tonic.
