National Chocolate Day is tomorrow, and I’m celebrating for three days, so what better combination could we have than chocolate and bourbon together in this chocolate old fashioned. We all know bourbon and chocolate go well together.
And, when Ballotin Whiskey Original Chocolate gets added to that most famous of whiskey cocktails, it’s time to dance. It’s a lush blend of dark chocolate notes and whiskey flavors to add vanilla, caramel, and baking spice flavors.
Add a splash of orange bitters and this cocktail whiskey cocktail is an utterly fantastic, easy riff on the classic old fashioned created by Ballotin Whiskey.
While this post is sponsored by Ballotin Whiskey, I use Ballotin whiskies in many cocktails regularly. It’s a wonderful product I love to use in combination with bourbon and rye cocktails.
About Ballotin Whiskey
Ballotin Whiskey got its start in Louisville working with the industry giant Flavorman to create a line of flavored whiskies. Of course, being from Louisville, there’s a plethora of Brown-Forman experience with co-owner Paul Tuell to create a flavored whiskey that’s approachable to whiskey newbies and interesting for bourbon enthusiasts alike.
By carefully choosing the sourced whiskey at its base, the Ballotin line aims to keep a whiskey flavor while building on those flavors with additions like chocolate, bourbon ball and mint. It’s a fine line, but the flavored whiskies they produce are not overly sweet and work wonders in cocktails to add whiskey and sweet flavors together.
In fact, they’re so good, you could just drink them over ice as cocktails themselves.
Ballotin makes a full line of flavors, including Caramel Turtle, Bourbon Ball, Chocolate Mint, Peanut Butter Chocolate, Chocolate Cherry Cream and Chocolate Mocha Cream.
But, let’s focus on the original: Ballotin Original Chocolate.
What’s in an Old Fashioned?
The old-fashioned is one of the most famous whiskey cocktails. Consisting of whiskey, bitters, and sugar, the old fashioned plays well with other flavors and chocolate sings with this combination.
While many people prefer their old fashioned muddled, for this cocktail, using Ballotin Original Chocolate means we don’t need to add any sugar.
If you’re a muddler, muddle your orange slice and a cherry in the bottom of the glass with your bitters to get orange oils mixed into your cocktail. But don’t macerate that poor orange and cherry into pieces at the bottom of your glass.
I’ll build my old fashioned in a mixing glass, then pour over one large rock in an old fashioned glass. Since it’s for National Chocolate Day, dip the old fashioned glass into some chocolate to have some fun with garnish.
Really for any chocolate whiskey cocktail, adding that chocolate rim, either dusting with cocoa or dipping in melted chocolate adds a quick and flavorful garnish.

Ingredients in a Chocolate Old Fashioned
For this old fashioned riff, we won’t need additional sugar given the sweet chocolate flavor from the Ballotin Original Chocolate. However, we can’t make an old fashioned without bitters, so orange and chocolate bitters are a necessary addition.
Just to up the whiskey flavor, we’ll have a base of bourbon in this chocolate old fashioned. Orange bitters, whiskey, and chocolate whiskey and chocolate bitters make a delectable combination.
Instead of just an orange peel, let’s up the chocolate level with a little extra garnish. I’m dipping the dried orange chip in melted chocolate and adding some chocolate to the rim to make the cocktail extra fancy and decadent.
How to Make This Chocolate Bitters Old Fashioned
If you’re looking for another chocolate bitters old fashioned, try my Chocolate Mint Julep, but serve over 1 large rock instead of crushed ice.
Or, this Peanut Butter Chocolate Old Fashioned that is to die for – featuring peanut butter whiskey, chocolate whiskey, and some lovely chocolate bitters.
This is a classic cocktail built in a mixing glass (or just in the rocks glass before adding ice). Add your chocolate whiskey (or creme de cacao if you don’t have any), bourbon, orange bitters and chocolate bitters. Add ice, stir until well chilled and strain into a rocks glass rimmed with melted chocolate and garnish with an orange peel.

What a beautiful celebration of chocolate! Yum!
This looks addictive, thanks for posting.
Yum, bought the Ballotin chocolate and didn’t know what to do with it. Muddled the cherry with bitters, and had some blood orange cordial syrup to mix with it. Tasty indeed.
Sounds so good. Lovely flavor combination!
This cocktail is delicious and I’m so glad I discovered ballotin chocolate whiskey through your site. I’ve recently experimented with a cocktail I like to call “chocolate covered banana” and would love to hear your thoughts: .5 oz howler head banana whiskey, .5 oz chocolate bourbon, 1.5 oz rye, .25 oz chocolate liquor, dash cinnamon moonshine or bitters, and w few dashes chocolate bitters.
I absolutely LOVE adding banana and chocolate flavors to whiskey drinks so it sounds like heaven to me!
What type of chocolate (unsweetened, semi-sweet, etc) did you use to rim the glasses AND exactly how did you rim the glasses?
