Bomb (Pops) Away – Bourbon Margarita

A box of Bomb Pops fell into the grocery cart last night, and I wanted to do something that played with the colors of today, Independence Day and I came up with a bourbon margarita. I mixed up my take on a bright red bourbon margarita and topped the cocktail off with a Bomb Pop. It was a hit.

I enjoy tequila, but I love bourbon. So what would happen if I took a typical tequila recipe, the margarita, and substituted bourbon for tequila? I hadn’t tried to just substitute out the base spirit, but it was time.

Instead of heading to a family gathering to celebrate today, we’re staying in, keeping social contacts down, and trying to keep things safe. It’s hard to watch the numbers rise day after day when all the people I know are taking things so seriously and keeping one another as safe as we can. It’s devastating to see the numbers rise, and know that today, people will be celebrating in large groups, trying to celebrate the troubled history of “freedom” in our country, but may be spreading the illness to their friends and families.

I’m doing my part by coming up with a recipe you can make at home, and topping a cocktail on the back porch with a popsicle may be as exciting as it gets today, but I’ll take it, if it means keeping myself and my family safe.

So I took a basic margarita recipe, substituted hibiscus syrup for simple syrup, added a little Solerno Blood Orange liqueur and put my bourbon in the shaker to see what would happen. I’m pleased with the results.

Adding the extra sweetness of the Bomb pop as it slowly melted into the cocktail was just a bonus. So mix this one up, keep your family and yourself safe today, and celebrate, or not as you see fit. We’re in a place today where many people are just now realizing that “land of the free” doesn’t mean freedom for all, just a select few. We’re working on it, but there’s serious work to be done.

So do a little work, head over to your liquor cabinet, and mix one of these up to close out the day. It feels like we all need one.

If you’re looking for another popsicle recipe, try yesterday’s Peach Sour Popsicle cocktail.

Twist up a summery margarita with a bourbon base spirit and splash of dark red hibiscus spirit. Top with a Bomb popsicle in red, white and blue, and sip slowly let the flavors meld and melt slowly.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • ½ oz Solerno blood orange liqueur
  • 1 oz hibiscus simple syrup
  • Garnish: salt and a Bomb Popsicle

Instructions

  • Combine bourbon, lime juice, orange liqueur, and simple syrup into a shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously until the sides of the shaker are painfully cold. Double strain into a coupe glass garnished with a salt rim and top with a Bomb Pop. Let it sit for a minute or two for the popsicle to start melting into the cocktail, then bombs away.

Notes

**Hibiscus simple: Heat 1 cup of water to a boil and add ½ tablespoon dried hibiscus flowers. Steep for 8 minutes. Strain, and add to a small saucepan. Add 1 cup of sugar. Heat until the sugar is dissolved, then cool. Strain and refrigerate. Store in the fridge for 2 to 4 weeks.

Another great holiday recipe! The sweetness of the bomb pop
Is a perfect way to balance the tartness of the Margarita. Looks amazing too! A new 4th go-to cocktail!
