Coffee Cherry Smash - Smash and Grab

Picture of Heather Wibbels, Cocktail Contessa, pouring a cocktailHeather Wibbels
Sweet cherry and bitter coffee marry and have a love child in this coffee-forward cocktail. Because it leans so heavy with the additional liqueurs, you can use rum or vodka as a base spirit here. However, I strongly suggest whiskey because it adds vanilla notes to the cocktail. For a coffee orange alternative, see the notes below.

Ingredients

  • 6 large pitted sweet cherries
  • ½ oz coffee syrup** see recipe below
  • ½ oz coffee liqueur
  • ½ oz cherry liqueur (I had Cherry Heering. Luxardo Marachino would make it less sweet)
  • 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
  • Garnish: cherries and a sprig of mint

Instructions

  • Place the cherries and the coffee syrup in the bottom of a shaker. Muddle to release the juices from the cherries. Add the cherry and coffee liqueurs and the whiskey. Fill with ice and shake until very cold. Strain into a rocks glass filled with crushed ice and garnish with a few cherries and a spring of mint, lightly spanked.
