Blackberry Sunset Whiskey Sour

Picture of Heather Wibbels, Cocktail Contessa, pouring a cocktailHeather Wibbels
Gorgeous dark purple blackberry simple syrup and a touch of blackberry liqueur make this summer sour a beauty to behold whether served over ice or neat in a coupe glass. Garnish with fresh or frozen blackberries and a thin slice of lemon and you’ve got a beautiful sour you’ll want to make again and again.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz bourbon 100 proof or higher
  • ¾ oz blackberry liqueur
  • ¾ oz lemon juice
  • ¾ oz blackberry simple syrup* See notes for recipe
  • ¾ oz egg white or aquafaba optional
  • 3 dashes black walnut bitters
  • Garnish: fresh or frozen blackberries and a lemon slice

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients except the garnish in a shaking tin with one ice cube and shake for 30 seconds.
  • Open the shaker, fill with ice and shake a second time, 30-60 seconds.
  • Double strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with blackberries and lemon.

Notes

*Blackberry simple syrup: combine 2 cups frozen blackberries, ½ cup water and 1 cup sugar in a small saucepan and cook until the blackberries are thawed, soft and very juicy. As the blackberries cook down a bit, press on the berries to release the juice. Stir until the sugar is all dissolved and the blackberries have turned a bit purple. Let the syrup cool and strain out the pulp from the blackberries. Store the syrup in the fridge and save the strained out sweetened blackberries to eat on ice cream.
